La valise Mexicaine

Jeudi dernier, je suis allé à Paris voir l'exposition au MAHJ sur la Valise Mexicaine de Capa, Gerda et Chim.
Cette valise contenait 4500 négatifs de ces trois photographes pris pendant la guerre civile Espagnole. En 1939, la valise s'est perdue dans un consulat avant de réapparaitre cinquante ans plus tard. On connaissait plusieurs photos publiées à l'époque dans différents journaux mais on redécouvre les 4500 négatifs.

Il y a un double intérêt à cette exposition.
Tout d'abord, cela permet de comprendre l'apport de ce trio au photojournalisme et même la philosophie de l'agence Magnum. Les photos sont construites, pensées avec parfois une visée artistique.
Le second intérêt est de comprendre pourquoi certaines photos ont été publiées et pas d'autres.

Je vous conseille d'amener ou de louer une loupe pour éviter rester deux heures le nez collé au mur et question achat, si le coffret à 85€ est très complet, le livret à 11€ est suffisant.

J'ai passé deux heures en Espagne, on voit bien quelques combats mais on ressent aussi tous les principaux épisodes de cette guerre aux travers des yeux des civils photographiés et du talent des trois artistes.

Last Thursday I went to see the exhibition at the MAHJ in Paris about the Mexican Suitcase of Capa, Chim and Gerda.

This case contains 4500 negative of these three photographers taken during the Spanish Civil War. In 1939, the case was lost in a consulate before reappearing fifty years later. We knew several published photos at this time in various newspapers but the 4500 negative are rediscovered.

There are two advantages to this exhibition.
First, it helps to understand the contribution of this trio in photojournalism and even about the philosophy of Magnum. Photos are constructed with sometimes an artistic approach.
The second interest is to understand why some of the photos were published and not the others.

I advise you to bring or rent a magnifying glass to avoid staying two hours nose against the wall. If you need to purchase a souvenir, the big books at 85 € are very complete but the book at € 11 is enough.
I spent two hours in Spain, we can see some fights but we also feel all the main events of the war through the eyes of the photographed civilians and the talents of these three artists.
